Comprehensive Study on Environmental Behaviour and Degradation by Photolytic/Photocatalytic Oxidation Processes of Pharmaceutical Memantine

Memantine is a pharmaceutical used to treat memory loss, one of the main symptoms dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. The use memantine expected continue grow due increasing proportion elderly population worldwide. aim this work was conduct comprehensive study on behaviour in environment possibilities its removal from wastewater. Abiotic elimination processes (hydrolysis, photolysis sorption) were investigated. Results showed that stable easily leached river sediment. Therefore, further investigation focused by advanced oxidation would prevent release into environment. For photolytic photocatalytic degradation memantine, ultraviolet (UV) lamps with predominant radiation wavelengths 365 nm (UV-A) 254/185 (UV-C) as source light. TiO2 form nanostructured film deposited borosilicate glass wall reactor for experiments. Photodegradation followed pseudo-first-order kinetics. half-life UV-A light much higher (46.3 min) than obtained UV-C (3.9 min).
